DAKOTA - a stay to remember

The Lily now offers you the opportunity to stay in a true icon of aviation – an original 1944 Dakota. Although it won’t fly you to tropical destinations any more, we do believe it will provide you a level of comfort and luxury that is ‘more first class than first class’.

A description of the facilities from the nose down;

The cockpit gives you a glimpse of the plane as it was in its flying days. The former navigator’s room now accommodates the bathroom, with a toilet and a shower. The forward half of the passenger section has been converted into the bedroom. The bedroom floor is slightly sloping, but don't worry, the beds are horizontal. Further down you will find the living area and kitchen and pantry, which are situated next to the double entrance doors. These cargo doors open onto the outside covered seating area which provides spectacular and uninterrupted views of the Stirling Range.

The plane is self-contained with 2 single beds, high quality linen, towels, reverse cycle air conditioning, free wi-fi, fully equipped kitchen with fridge, electric cook- top (no oven), microwave and pantry essentials supplied such as (real) coffee, tea, sugar, milk, oils, vinegar and spices. In the living area you will find a TV, DVD, sound system, a selection of DVDs, CDs, games and books.

The Dakota sleeps a maximum of 2 persons.

HISTORY in a nutshell

Our plane was built in 1943/44 in Long Beach California and was issued to the Netherlands East Indies Transport Section, based in Brisbane, Queensland, where it was used for transport duties on behalf of the Royal Dutch Indonesian Airways (KNILM). The aircraft operated supply flights for Dutch military units, and later airlifted liberated Dutch POWs from New Guinea to Australia. After the war many Dakotas were sold to the commercial airlines around the world.

In her day, she was a technological marvel and is still one of the most iconic and successful planes ever built. The Dakota is also known as DC3, C47, Gooney Bird, Sky-train, Sky-trooper and many other names. Initially designed in the early thirties for the commercial airlines in America, the Dakota was quickly adopted for the war effort, with thousands being built. The Dakota was instrumental in helping end World War 2.

In 1947 our plane found a home at the KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) and later Garuda. She did service in our region till 21st January 1974 when she made an emergency belly landing in Broome. All seven passengers escaped injury. Only the engineer was slightly injured. This was the end of active service of our bird. She never flew again.

The plane arrived at The Lily in September 2012.
